UTC English Students in class

English

Degree(s) available: Bachelor, Minor
This program is in person.

What is the Study of English?
“Unless you are at home in metaphor,” Robert Frost wrote—unless you are able to deal with the complexities, implications and surprises of the world that surrounds us —then “you are lost.”

As one of the humanities, the discipline of English concerns itself with how literature, language and writing work in the world. English majors engage in the critical and creative study and practice of how these three threads intertwine, shape the self and our perceptions of others and create and govern the cultures of the world.

Why Choose English at UTC?
The English Department offers specialization tracks in Rhetoric and Professional Writing, Creative Writing and Literary Studies, taught by dedicated faculty who have won awards both for their publications and for their teaching. Classes are small and foster discussion, providing opportunities for community in and out of the classroom. English majors have a faculty mentor to help them navigate the program and provide direction for life after graduation. Our programs offer insight into the human condition and help students develop their creativity and rhetorical savvy. English majors are employed in a wide range of careers, and our Internship Program has placed students at City Farms, SoLit, Scenic Trend, Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, PBS, local law firms, local realtors, and the UTC Library.

Classes and Opportunities
Regardless of which track students pursue, English majors have five common courses that introduce them to the skills of literary and rhetorical analysis, as well as provide firm grounding in the British and American literary traditions.
Course offerings at the junior and senior levels have included, for example:

  • Literary Editing and Publishing
  • Mental Illness in American Literature
  • Working Class Rhetorics
  • Speculative Fiction Workshop
  • Shakespeare and Revenge Tragedy Writing for Social Change
  • Interactive Narratives
  • Black Women Writers
  • Parody, Humor and Satire

A senior capstone experience can be satisfied through the Senior Seminar, which rotates topics in the three tracks from semester to semester, an internship with a Chattanooga business or the University, a traditional or creative B.A. thesis or by work on a major departmental project such as the Sequoya Review.
